A man had died in a horror three-vehicle crash that brought traffic to a near-standstill for several hours during peak hour south-east of Adelaide.

Late on Thursday afternoon, emergency services were called to the South Eastern Freeway between Stirling and Bridgewater.

A statement from SA Police said a four-wheel-drive travelling outbound crashed into a station wagon and motorcycle heading toward Adelaide.

The motorcycle rider, a 53-year-old man from Highbury, died at the scene.

The other drivers suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospital for minor treatment.
