The mayor of a South Australian council has implored locals to stop abandoning shopping trolleys which she says are "clogging up" public spaces.
The City of Salisbury in Adelaide's north recently recovered about 40 trolleys which it said had been deliberately abandoned.
The council is currently pushing the State Government to introduce stronger regulations that would place extra responsibility on retailers to deal with the issue.
"They're clogging up the streets, they're clogging up the creeks, they're clogging up the drains, and people can't go down there [to recover them]," Mayor Gillian Aldridge said.
"I walk around each morning in my particular area and there's two or three around. There's no doubt that something has to be done."
The cost of collecting, maintaining and replacing trolleys nationally has been estimated at about $50 million per year.
