Richard Freedman has paid ailing Subzero the ultimate accolade by declaring the much-loved Melbourne Cup winner is Australia’s greatest living thoroughbred – greater than Winx.

Freedman, who looked after two-year-old horses for his business partner and brother Lee when Subzero first arrived at the Freedman stables, believes the impact of ‘Subbie' on Australian society has been immeasurable.

Subzero’s racetrack feats including winning the 1992 Melbourne Cup are one thing.

But Subbie’s retirement days of untold hours of doing charity work visiting schools, hospitals and hospices and cheering up sick and terminally ill kids and the elderly are another thing indeed.

Plenty of dying kids have had their spirits raised by visits from Subzero and he often brought smiles to their faces for the first time in weeks.

Freedman believes that makes Subzero stand alone.

“I think he is the greatest living thoroughbred – some people might say what about Winx?” Freedman said.

“Yes, Winx is a great thoroughbred too.

“But when Winx has done decades of community service giving untold joy to people who can’t even go to the races, can’t afford to have a bet, when Winx has done that, then she can be the greatest living thoroughbred.
